Wild Grass

by

Luke 12: 27-28 says, “Look how the wildflowers grow: they don’t work or make clothes for themselves. But I tell you that not even King Solomon with all his wealth had clothes as beautiful as one of these flowers. It is God who clothes the wild grass — grass that is here today and gone tomorrow, burnt up in the oven. Won’t he be all the more sure to clothe you? How little faith you have!”

When we owned our home, we used to get a lot of unwanted weeds in the front yard. [To me, there is a wanted kind of weed: dandelions.] Every time I did this, I would think of the verse quoted above. This wild grass had once been vibrant green with soft and luscious blades. Now they were yellow and papery, hardly giving a fight when I yanked at the roots.

Our God gives even the short-lived weeds a dazzling attire for a day or two. I am sure Jesus could have used butterflies as examples, too. Most butterflies live only for a short while, but they take our breath away with their eye-popping outfits. So, Jesus is basically taking care of every living being. We, humans, are the only ones who are worrying and turning gray because we are not sure. I wish I could tell you I take Jesus at His word and rest easy about trivial things, such as clothing!

In the same lesson, Jesus tells the people that they will get food, just like the birds taken care of by our Heavenly Father. My silly nature comes out sometimes when I hear birds chirping incessantly in the trees. I imagine their conversations:

“Hiya, neighbor. Any plans today?”

“You know, the usual stuff. Eat, sleep, chirp, fly, eat, sleep, chirp, fly…”

“Oh yeah! This is the life, I tell you. What is for lunch?”

“I don’t know, but we will fill our bellies soon. Jesus himself promised that he would feed us, and he has never failed so far.”

“I hear you, girl. Amen to that!”

I pray that the next time we worry if our needs will be taken care of, we can look at the wildflowers and weeds on the ground and heed the songs of the birds. After all, Jesus Himself promised to clothe and feed His children.

God bless you and your loved ones!
