Earthly Power versus God’s Power

by

““Do you refuse to speak to me?” Pilate said. “Don’t you realize I have power either to free you or to crucify you?” Jesus answered, “You would have no power over me if it were not given to you from above. Therefore the one who handed me over to you is guilty of a greater sin” (John 19:10-11).

The first time I read the words of Jesus telling Pilate he would have no power over His crucifixion, I was puzzled because it is obvious the crucifixion happened. Only after I really understood the plan of salvation did I realize what Jesus was saying. Pilate was put in that position to fulfill the prophecy of how Jesus was to die: on a tree: a cross (Deut. 27:26). Pilate could only be doing what he did because God gave him the breath and the status he had. No one and nothing can destroy God. If Heavenly Father had not wished that Jesus should die on the cross, nothing in all creation would have been able to commit that heinous act against the Son of God.

Even when Jesus seems completely out of control of His own death, He is still in charge because He has authored the plan of salvation even before anything was created. Now that is power, not the humanly power of Pilate to determine who gets out of prison and who gets hung on a cross.

It is so comforting to know that even things seem out of control in my life, Jesus is still holding everything together. Aren’t you glad we serve a God who is always in control and does what is best?

God bless you and your loved ones!
