Consider Others Better Than Yourselves
When I gave this as a challenge to my high school students, they struggled to understand what it even meant. Seriously, what does God really want from us with this command?
I don’t think this means to consider ourselves less or worse than others. I see it more like a wake-up call. We are not all that and more. Nobody is. However, we play this game with ourselves and others: mirror, mirror in the wall who is the best of all? This traps us. When we look down on people, we might be going up in the see-saw of life, but on the inside, we are as light-weight as we can be, spiritually and emotionally.
If I have to step on others to climb the ladder of life, I might end up all alone up there because there won’t be anyone left to welcome me and celebrate my success. I will have reached the zenith just to realize it was all for nothing.
When we consider others better than ourselves, it means we measure ourselves up and see that we are no better off than others. If we were honest with ourselves, it would be obvious that we have all fallen short of the glory of God. Nothing we can do will make up for that lack. What Christ has done through the cross and the resurrection has done it. Let us look at the perfection of God, and then we will be in a better understanding of ourselves.
God bless you and your loved ones!
