Addition or Submission
“Submission” is a word we use to define our relationship with Jesus as Christians. We are asked to surrender our lives to Him. All of it! This sounds scary. What if we open our hearts to Him, give our all, but He makes a fool of us?
Knowing and loving Christ spurs us to make Him the Captain of our lives. Two people cannot sail the same boat to two different ports at the same time. There is only one destination we can arrive at, once we both agree on it. This is a silly comparison, really.
Our God can see everything all at once: the beginning and the end are right next to each other in His view because He is not limited by time and space. He has the bird’s eye view, so to speak. Therefore, He knows the best path for our lives at any moment. Only when we surrender our will to His will that He can work best in us through the promptings of the Holy Spirit and make us who we were created to be.
Submission is the only way with Jesus; addition is out of the question. We cannot just add him to our life and call on Him as we wish: “I will keep on living my life the way I see fit, but I would like you, Jesus, to stay put there until I cannot manage on my own.”
Like our pastor says, “We cannot tell Jesus ‘All I am and all I have is yours, except that!’” We have to give Him 100%. It is His anyway. What do we have that we brought when we were born? What is it that we are planning to take with us when we leave?
God bless you and your loved ones!
